City releases 2013 Annual Water Quality Report
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed June 13, 2014 10:00 AM
Summary
The City released its 2013 Annual Water Quality Report that identifies water quality testing results from water samples taken throughout 2013. To comply with provincial drinking water regulations, the City provides Vancouver Island Health Authority with a copy of this report. The City makes this report public and available to all residents.
Link to Strategic Plan: This report supports the strategic priority of water and corporate accountability.
Key Points
- In 2013 potable water in Nanaimo met both the federal and provincial standards for drinking water quality.
- The City collected raw and potable water samples that were uniquely identified and sent to provincially approved laboratories for testing.
- Water sample parameters listed in the report are identified in the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality maximum acceptable concentrations or based upon aesthetic objectives.
- The report lists a few representative parameters that the City tests for, although several more are tested.
Quotes
"Over the past year, Public Works Operations staff have worked hard to ensure that there is an adequate supply of safe, clean potable water in Nanaimo. With regular water quality sampling undertaken throughout the year all residents and business will be pleased to learn that their drinking water met all the standards identified in the Provincial Drinking Water Protection Act."
Quick Facts
- The City produced and treated 15,303 million litres (3,363 million imperial gallons) of water in 2013.
- In 2013 the City took 1001 samples of treated water to test for microbiological bacteria all of which passed testing with no failures.
- The City's water is classified as very soft, averaging 12.2 mg/litre (0.7 grains/gallon) in 2013 on the water hardness scale.
- The City does not add fluoride to the water supply and distribution system. The water is chlorinated to prevent bacterial and viral growth.
