Orthorectified aerial imagery, LiDAR, and contour data covering the City of Nanaimo is available for download. Aerial photos of the City (Area A) are available for 2022, 2020, 2018, 2016, 2014, 2012 and 2009 with additional aerial photos covering the surrounding area and the City's watershed (Area B) available for 2009.

The data is provided in the following formats under the terms of the Open Government Licence – Nanaimo

Acquisition Details

2022 Aerial Photos
Orthophotos – Captured in May 2022 and June 2022 with a mean photo scale of 1:8,845 to support a 4.0 cm pixel size in the published imagery. The imagery was orthorectified using a digital terrain model developed from LiDAR data collected in 2016 and updated in 2022 using photogrammetric methods. The horizontal accuracy of the imagery is +/- 8.0cm at a 95% confidence level. Additional details are available in the Nanaimo 2022 Aerial Triangulation Report.

2020 Aerial Photos
Orthophotos – Captured in April 2020 with a mean photo scale of 1:8,863 to support a 4.0 cm pixel size in the published imagery. The imagery was orthorectified using a digital terrain model developed from LiDAR data collected in 2016 and updated in 2020 using photogrammetric methods. The horizontal accuracy of the imagery is +/- 8.0cm at a 95% confidence level. Additional details are available in the Nanaimo 2020 Aerial Triangulation Report.

2018 Aerial Photos
Orthophotos – Captured in May 2018 with an average ground sample distance of 3.5 cm and resampled to 5cm in the published imagery. The imagery was orthorectified using a digital terrain model developed from LiDAR data collected in 2016 and updated in 2018 using photogrammetric methods. 2016 Aerial Photos and LiDAR
Orthophotos – Captured in March and April 2016 at a spatial resolution of 5cm. The imagery was orthorectified using a digital terrain model developed from LiDAR data collected in 2016. The horizontal accuracy of the imagery is +/- 8.2cm at a 95% confidence level. Additional details are available in the Nanaimo 2016 Aerial Triangulation Report

2014 Aerial Photos
Captured in July 2014 at a spatial resolution of 30cm. The imagery was orthorectified using a digital terrain model developed from LIDAR data collected in 2009. The horizontal accuracy of the imagery is unknown as accuracy testing has not been completed. There are 2014 orthophotos available for Area A.

2012 Aerial Photos
Captured between July 10 and 17, 2012 at a spatial resolution of 10cm and orthorectified to a positional accuracy of 10cm RMS at a 90% confidence level. They are available for Area A, as well as grids 851 and 852 in Area B.

2009 Aerial Photos
Captured between March 29 and April 5, 2009 for Area A and Area B. Provided in MrSID format.

Area A – Captured at a spatial resolution of 10cm and orthorectified to a positional accuracy of 10cm RMS at a 90% confidence level.

Area B – Captured at a spatial resolution of 30cm and orthorectified to a positional accuracy of 2m RMS at a 90% confidence level.
