Fire Cause Investigation

Fire Investigations

The BC Fire Services Act mandates that all structure fires, vehicle fires, fire related fatalities, major injuries, and explosions be investigated. Nanaimo Fire Rescue typically initiates these investigations within three business days of an incident. Our investigators work to determine the cause, origin, and circumstances of every fire whether accidental, negligent, or intentional.

These investigations:

  • Provide critical data for improving building/fire codes
  • Inform updates to safety regulations and standards
  • Shape public fire prevention education programs

Nanaimo Fire Rescue investigators:

  • Receive specialized training in fire science methodology
  • Maintain strict impartiality in determining fire causation
  • Collaborate with RCMP on suspected arson cases to establish origin and cause
