🔥 FireSmart Nanaimo
Protect Your Home. Protect Your Community.
Living in a fire-prone region like Vancouver Island means wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility. By taking proactive steps at home and working together as a neighbourhood, we can reduce the risk of wildfire damage and help protect our families, properties, and the broader Nanaimo community.
🏡 FireSmart Starts at Home
You don’t need to live in the forest to be at risk. Homes in urban-wildland interface areas are especially vulnerable. Here’s how you can get started:
- Download the FireSmart Homeowner’s Manual – A practical guide to reducing wildfire risk around your home and property.
- Use the FireSmart Begins at Home App – Answer simple questions about your property and receive customized recommendations.
- Google Play Store FireSmart Begins at Home
- Apple App Store FireSmart Begins at Home
- Take the FireSmart 101 Course – A free, short online course for anyone new to FireSmart principles.
🔗 Visit FireSmart BC for tools, resources, and downloads.
🧯 Wildfire Preparedness & Prevention
Being FireSmart also means knowing what to do before, during, and after a wildfire:
- Wildfire Preparedness – Learn how to create an emergency plan and prepare your home.
- Wildfire Prevention – Easy actions that make a big difference.
- Fire Bans & Restrictions – Always check before burning or lighting a campfire.
- Current Wildfire Activity – Stay informed about active fires in your area.
- BC Wildfire Service Mobile App - The App provides up-to-date wildfire information on your mobile phone, helping you stay informed.
- App Store - BC Wildfire Service
- Google Play Store - BC Wildfire Service
- EmergencyInfoBC - Find current and official information during emergencies in B.C.
🚁 Drones & Wildfires: Know the Law
Flying drones or UAVs near wildfires is illegal and dangerous. All wildfires are automatically designated as flight-restricted zones under Canadian Aviation Regulations. Violators can face fines up to $25,000 and 18 months in jail.
🔥 Prescribed Burning & Fuel Management
Prescribed burning is a controlled method used by professionals to reduce fuel loads and restore natural ecosystems. It’s part of a broader fire and fuel management strategy that balances environmental health, public safety, and land use.
