🍳 Kitchen Fire Safety Tips

The kitchen is the heart of the home—but it’s also where most house fires start. Stay safe with these essential tips:

🔥 Top Causes of Kitchen Fires

  • Unattended cooking is the leading cause.
  • Grease buildup, flammable items near the stove, and overheated oil can all ignite quickly.
  • Loose clothing or long sleeves can catch fire near open flames.

🧯 Preventing Fires While Cooking

  • Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food.
  • If you must leave—even briefly—turn off the stove.
  • Keep flammable items (like towels, oven mitts, and paper) away from burners.
  • Clean regularly to prevent grease buildup.
  • Use a timer to remind you when food is cooking.

🚫 What NOT to Do

  • Never throw water on a grease fire—it can cause the fire to spread.
  • Don’t cook if you’re sleepy, distracted, or under the influence of alcohol or medication.

🧯 If a Fire Starts

  • Grease fire? Slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames. Turn off the heat and leave the pan covered until it cools.
  • Oven or microwave fire? Keep the door closed and turn off the appliance.
  • If the fire spreads or you feel unsafe, get out and call 911.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Teach Kitchen Safety

  • Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove.
  • Turn pot handles inward to prevent spills.
  • Teach older children how to cook safely under supervision.
