🔥 Fire Extinguishers: Know When and How to Use Them

🚨 Important Reminder

Fire extinguishers are designed for small fires only. Most extinguishers discharge in under 30 seconds, so they are not suitable for large or spreading fires. When used correctly, they can help control a fire until firefighters arrive.

🧯 Installation & Maintenance

  • Install in plain view, near an exit, and away from heat sources.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for regular maintenance.
  • Make sure your extinguisher is charged and ready to use at all times.

🧠 How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: Remember PASS

  1. Pull the pin to unlock the extinguisher.
  2. Aim low, pointing the nozzle at the base of the fire.
  3. Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
  4. Sweep from side to side, covering the area of the fire.

✅ Always keep a safe distance and never turn your back on a fire.

🔤 Types of Fire Extinguishers

Each extinguisher is labeled with a class icon to show what type of fire it can be used on:

  • Class A – Ordinary combustibles (wood, cloth, paper)
  • Class B – Flammable liquids (gasoline, oil)
  • Class C – Electrical fires (wiring, appliances)
  • Class D – Flammable metals (magnesium, potassium)

Make sure you have the right type of extinguisher for the risks in your home or workplace.
