City and Yacht Club Agree to Expand Walkway by 2019

Summary

At its July 21, 2014 Special Open Council meeting, the City of Nanaimo and the Nanaimo Yacht Club (NYC) entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) to expand the waterfront walkway by the end of 2019. The design includes improved lighting, vegetation buffer, extension of the cycle path from the Queen Elizabeth II Promenade, an enhanced pedestrian walkway, handrails and improvements to the intersection at the NYC dock head. In addition, the LOI sets out a cost share agreement and timing commitments to upgrade the existing waterfront walkway fronting the NYC.

Link to Strategic Plan: Waterfront Enhancement: enhanced public access and use. Transportation and Mobility: increased use and viability of alternative transportation options through improved infrastructure.

Key Points

  • The existing walkway is three meters wide and will be expanded to seven meters in width. The additional area will support cyclists and encourage more people to explore the downtown waterfront.
  • The public will be asked to comment on the conceptual design drawings once the project partners confirm a construction date.

Quotes

"The waterfront is one of Nanaimo's key assets. Expanding and improving the four kilometre waterfront walkway will encourage even more people to enjoy this special and iconic part of our City."
