City acquisition of Five Acre Farm creates future opportunities for Harewood

Summary

At their August 26, 2019 in-camera meeting, Council approved the purchase of 933 Park Avenue. Also known as "Five Acre Farm", the property is located in the Harewood neighbourhood with a natural wetland and an operating farm.

An agreement is also in place for Nanaimo Foodshare to use a portion of the property to grow food for Nanaimo's citizens. Potential future uses for the land include park use, as a productive wetland, a site for food production and future housing opportunities.

Link to Strategic Plan: This acquisition will protect a natural wetland and agricultural land in food production, which is in line with Council's commitment to Environmental Responsibility. In addition, a portion of the site can be used for housing which supports the Livability pillar in the Strategic Plan.
