Potential Canada Post strike may delay City tax notices

City of Nanaimo encourages property owners to use online services to avoid disruptions

Summary

A possible Canada Post strike may delay delivery of property tax notices to Nanaimo property owners. City Council is expected to adopt the 2025 Property Tax Rate bylaw later this month, notices typically follow by mail shortly after.

To avoid disruption, the City encourages residents to register for a free MyCity account to securely view their property tax balance and receive notices via email. A folio number and access code from a previous bill or tax notice are required to sign up.

Important Reminders:

  • Property tax payments are due Tuesday, July 2, 2025.
  • Home Owner Grant applications must be submitted by July 2, 2025 at: www.gov.bc.ca/Homeownergrant to avoid penalties on the unclaimed amount.

To ensure your payment is received on time, do not mail your payment. Instead, choose one of the following secure options:

  • Pay in person at the City's Service and Resource Centre at 411 Dunsmuir St. Office is open Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm. We do not accept payment with credit card .
  • Pay through your bank online or in person. Your account number is the 8-digit folio number found on your notice. We do not accept e-transfer.

A late payment penalty of 2% will be applied to current year outstanding balance at the end of the day on July 2, 2025 and an additional 8% will be applied at the end of day on August 29, 2025.
