New committee structure

Council committees have been re-organized and integrated to support council strategic priorities and to ensure these principles are embedded in each committee; there are now 6 key committees: Public Safety, Finance and Audit, Culture, Heritage and Social Planning, Parks, Recreation and Wellness, Public Works and Community.

Section 7a

Motion carried: 5-2

More funding for search and rescue

Council supported the adoption of an RDN bylaw to provide additional funding from between $41,300 to $53,710 for search and rescue organizations.

Motion carried: Unanimous.   

Development around Nanaimo

A new 10-unit multi-family development at 571 Albert Street will get the green light with a few variances to allow for a smaller front setback, reduction of parking spaces from five to three and reducing the size of parking spaces to accommodate small cars.

Motion carried: 6-1

The subdivision of two properties at 5800 Carlton Road and 6004 Nelson Road will go ahead, with a variance to reduce the allowable setback from McGregor Creek to 5.6 m from 15m.

Section 9b

Motion carried: Unanimous.

A new mix-use light industrial-office building will be built at 2589 Kenworth Road. The building will include a green roof with solar panels.

Section 9c

Motion carried: Unanimous.

Two new commercial buildings will go up at 1847 Dufferin Crescent with variances to increase the allowable height of two retaining walls from 1.8 m to 6.25 m and 1.8m to 5.25 m.

Section 9d

Motion carried: Unanimous.

The construction of single family homes on 3856, 3875, 3881 and 3887 Gulfview Drive got the go ahead with a variance to increase the height of a perimeter wall from 7.32 m to 9.93 m.

Motion carried: Unanimous.

The rezoning of 5264 Sherbourne Drive to permit two duplex lots passed first and second reading and will now go to public hearing.

Motion carried: Unanimous.

The rezoning of the property at 2408 York Cresecent into two lots passed first and second reading and will now go to public hearing.

Nuisance property

1505 Frew Road was declared a nuisance property due to an unsafe, dilapidated mobile home on the property.

Cleaning up properties

A number of property owners were ordered to clean up their properties within 14 days, or the City will clean them up at the owner’s expense.

Construction not completed

The property at 6041 Parkway Drive received a notice on the property title for failing to conform to the City’s building bylaw, as construction was not completed according to conditions of the building permit.

Motion carried: Unanimous.

Secondary suites addressed

A number of properties received a notice on the property title for failing to conform to the City’s building bylaw for secondary suites that need upgrading to address life safety issues.

Subdivision standards updated

The Manual of Engineering Standards and Specifications has been updated to include new subdivision standards that reflect industry best practices.

Addition to Military Museum

The Vancouver Island Military Museum will see a new addition to its collection - a 40 mm Bofors gun from the Coastal Patrol Vessel HMCS Nanaimo.  The gun was offered to the Museum by the Department of National Defense. The installation in front of the City-owned museum building honours the specific connection between Nanaimo and this ship, which includes granting of Freedom of the City status to the ship’s crew in 1997.

Football Club receives $600

The Harbour City Football Club’s Storm U14 Girls team received a $600 Travel Assistance Grant to attend the BC Soccer Provincial A Cup Championships in Burnaby July 7-10, 2016.

Improvement plan for Colliery Dam Park

An Improvement Action Plan is now in place for Colliery Dam Park. Top ideas include making the park more comfortable with additional picnic tables, benches, and garbage cans along with adding amenities to support special events and restoring a swimming beach at the lower dam.
