Nanaimo Ice Centre

This is one of seven sports-themed artworks that were printed to vinyl banners to mark the opening of the Nanaimo Ice Centre in 2006. Six of the wall hangings were made by enlarging prints by artist John Newby, and one artwork (titled Lacrosse) was contributed by Kelsey Theedom. The titles of Newby’s works in the series are: Choices, Girl Powered, He Shoots, Inspiration, Coachs' Corner, and Showdown.

John Newby (1942 - 2013) lived and worked primarily in Burlington, Ontario. His art career spanned 55 years. He studied art, attending Ontario College of Art in Toronto, and he also worked as a police officer and a firefighter. Newby created over two hundred paintings, many of which featured children involved in sports or everyday activities. His style has often been compared to Norman Rockwell.
