City preparing to move forward with plans to expand waterfront walkway

Waterfront Walkway a priority for Council

Summary

The City of Nanaimo is taking steps to undertake planing to expand the waterfront walkway, one of five key projects from Council's 2016-2019 Strategic Plan. An implementation plan will be prepared to identify a strategy for completing a waterfront walkway from Departure Bay to the Nanaimo Estuary. At the same time, the City will advance the design and construction of specific segments of the walkway by the end of 2018.

The City is currently seeking submissions from consultants to lead this project.

Link to Strategic Plan: Recreation, Culture, Sports and Tourism: connect walkways along our waterfront. Community Wellness: invest in walkways and bike routes.

Key Points

  • Upon completion, the walkway will be around 13km in length, connecting Departure Bay, Newcastle Channel, the Boat Basin, South Downtown Waterfront and the Nanaimo Estuary.
  • The expansion of the waterfront walkway is a partnership between the City, NPA, SFN, the Province and private land owners.
  • In preparing the plan, the public will be asked to provide their input and for feedback on the options and designs that are created.

Quotes

"The waterfront walkway is one of the amenities that defines our community. I look forward to seeing the walkway expanded in the next two years and the creation of a long term strategy that will lead to the completion of this wonderful asset."
