A Week of ‘Pop-Up Active Transportation’ for Nanaimo Commuters

City of Nanaimo partners up to highlight active travel options for City streets

Summary

The City of Nanaimo has collaborated with a variety of schools and community organizations to put together a week of ‘Active Transportation Demonstrations’. It will provide an opportunity for commuters in Nanaimo to support and encourage families using active modes of transportation (walking, cycling and transit) for school travel. Through the use of ‘pop-up’ infrastructure, the goal is to help increase driver awareness and to create comfortable streets for those of all ages and abilities travelling on foot, bike, on a wheel chair, or using transit.

The events begin Tuesday, June 19 at Departure Bay Eco-School and end Friday, June 22nd at Frank J Ney Elementary. Main times for activities will be during school drop-off/pick up which is between the hours of 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

• Tuesday, June 19: ‘Pop-up’ infrastructure such as temporary sidewalks will be installed on Departure Bay Rd.

• Wednesday, June 20: Temporary flashing beacons will be installed at the intersection of Dover Rd and Invermere Rd. Left-hand turns will be blocked at the intersection of McGirr Rd and McRobb Rd/Sierra Way.

• Thursday, June 21: ICBC + RCMP ‘Think of Me’ campaign will be active on Hammond Bay Rd.

• Friday, June 22: Temporary flashing beacons will be installed at the intersection of Hammond Bay Road at Williamson Rd.

The City of Nanaimo, School District 68, ICBC and the RCMP remind all road-users to pay attention to the infrastructure changes and be aware of an increase in active travellers on the roads during these days. Slow down, be aware and stay safe.
