New rental complex okayed
With requested changes to a supporting parking plan completed, Council approved the development permit for a new rental apartment complex at 1825 Summerhill Place.

Recycling contract renewed
Progressive Waste Services will continue to pick up Nanaimo’s recycling for at least the next 18 months with a rate increase to $29 per household starting October 1.

Bastion Street bridge repairs
Upgrades are needed to the Bastion Street Bridge to make it more seismically sound. This project, estimated to cost $1.7 million, could be completed in 2017. Council requested staff return a report providing options to replace the bridge entirely.

Bird Sanctuary gets new home
Council agreed to lease to the building formerly occupied by the SPCA on Labieux Road to the Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary.

Distillery lounge gets closer
Arbutus Distillery is one step closer to having a lounge in its Boxwood Road location, with Council giving approval for the liquor license application. The application will now go to the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch for final approval.

E&N Trail report received
A report detailing the possible extension of the E&N Trail between Franklyn and Seventh Street was received. Future decision-making concerning the trail may be taken once the outlook of rail service on Vancouver Island becomes clearer.

Wage and expense report released
The Statement of Financial Information (SOFI report) has been released. This Provincially legislated report is published on an annual basis and contains the City’s major expenditures and wages of individual staff members who earn over $75,000 per year.

Maffeo Sutton Park funding sought
The City will be applying for a $350,000 grant under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. The grant will go towards upgrades to the playground in Maffeo Sutton Park.

Preventing human trafficking
Coun. Bill Yoachim brought forward a motion for staff to report on the City’s initiatives to promote the prevention of human trafficking in Nanaimo.
