Events Centre financing to go to referendum
The financing plan for the proposed events centre will go to referendum with March 11, 2017 being recommended as the day of voting. The date will be confirmed by the Chief Election Officer. The referendum will cost the same as a regular election, $130,000.

City updating procurement policy
A recommendation from the Core Services Review to update the City’s procurement methods is underway with the adoption of a new procurement policy and the purchasing power bylaw passing three readings.

Culture & Heritage grants awarded
A number of community arts, cultural and heritage organizations were awarded grants for projects and daily operations. A total of $316,519 was given out.

Temporary public art selected
A total of seven artist’s works have been selected for the City’s Temporary Public Art Program. The pieces will be installed in parks and public spaces downtown during Public Art Week in May. This program will cost $30,000 to run in 2017.

Roundabout to connect Linley Valley West
Access to Linley Valley West will be provided by a new roundabout located at Rutherford Road and Nelson Road. To accommodate, the City will enter into a land swap with the owner of 5200 Rutherford Road for surplus City-owned land at 5290 Rutherford Road.

Development around Nanaimo
A new development will go up at the corner of Milton and Albert Streets and will include a mixture of retail and residential units.

The property at 3330 Stephenson Point Road will see a new house built on it with a variance to reduce the watercourse setback from 15m to 6.79m.

Decks ordered to be fixed
The owners of 1241 Woodlands Street and 773 Hunter have been ordered to either remove the decks on their properties or bring them up to BC Building Code standards within 30 days.

Nuisance properties
Declaring 21 Haliburton Street a nuisance property due to an unprecedented number of nuisance calls was deferred by Council for one month. If declared a nuisance property, the City can recover the cost of nuisance calls incurred either by City staff or the RCMP.
The owners of 432 Howard Avenue were handed a nuisance order on their property for failing to remove contaminated soil on their property.

Secondary suites addressed
The properties located at 5638 Christina Crescent, 59 Porter Road, 305 View Street and 5364 Vincent Place received a notice on the property title for failing to conform to the City’s building bylaw for secondary suites to be upgraded to address life safety issues.
