Funding approved for new garbage trucks
$6.2 million will be borrowed through the Equipment Financing Program for the implementation of the new automated waste collection coming to central Nanaimo fall 2017 and the rest of Nanaimo in 2018.

Nuisance properties
6 – 1637 Bowen Road, a strata townhouse complex and 643 Howard Avenue, a single-family dwelling are both subject of large number of police calls. Council declared the properties a nuisance, as defined by the bylaw and authorized staff to record and charge for municipal services.

Construction completed without required inspection

A notice on title was authorized for the property at 2079 Boxwood Road for construction completed without a required inspection. The property owner has 90 days to complete the permit before the notice is registered.

Council authorized a notice on the property title for construction completed on a secondary suite without a building permit at 3308 Upland Drive.

Development around Nanaimo
A housing agreement for a new 220-bed student housing building at 525 Third Street passed first, second and third readings.

Council passed first and second readings to rezone 615 and 699 Harewood Road from single dwelling residential to three and four unit residential in order to permit a fourplex on each lot.

A subdivision got the go ahead at 5670 Hammond Bay Road with a variance to reduce the minimum lot frontage.

Old hospital building to be demolished
The Old Nanaimo Hospital building located 388 Machleary Street is set for demolition. The building is listed on the City’s Community Heritage Register but does not have protected heritage status.

Temporary permit to change land use
A change to the Official Community Plan to allow a temporary use permit for the processing and distributing of firewood at 301 Eaton Street passed first and second reading.
