Update on "Tent City" Demonstration at City Hall

Last week, individuals set up a camp, or tent city, in front of City Hall as a demonstration for affordable housing in Nanaimo. Following Monday night's Council meeting, an agreement between the organizers of the tent city and staff was made whereas the campers would remove the demonstration on Tuesday, March 20.

As such, the City is enforcing the “Parks, Recreation and Culture Regulation Bylaw 2008, NO.7073” with any remaining tent occupants. City services have been provided to make disassembling tents and disposal of any garbage easier for the individuals.

Campers have been advised that they need to leave the City Hall grounds and that there are several locations within the City that would be acceptable locations for overnight shelter.

Overnight shelter for individuals is permitted from 7:00 pm- 9:00 am and is not to be near playgrounds, sports fields, riparian areas, Maffeo Sutton Park or City Hall grounds.
