Nanaimo sees increase in brush fires

Everyone has a role to play in preventing brush/wild fires

Summary

August is traditionally the most active month for brush/wild fire season as a result of the extremely dry conditions. Given the number of fires the City has recently had, and observing what is happening in the interior, Nanaimo Fire Rescue is encouraging the community to remain vigilant when outdoors regarding fire safety.

Link to Strategic Plan: The City of Nanaimo is committed to Public Safety.

Key Points

  • There were 15 brush/wild fires in the past month, compared to zero last year. Also, five brush/wild fires have occurred in the past week alone.
  • Due to poorly discarded smoking material there were four brush/wild fires, three were intentionally set and one was caused by fireworks.

Quotes

"The number of fires are very concerning, especially since the majority are human caused."
