The City of Nanaimo has a versatile workforce of over 750 people who are employed in a variety of functions and departments
It is the policy of the City of Nanaimo to hire and promote the best qualified candidates, thereby allowing the organization to maintain a high level of service to the public. In order to build a diverse workforce, all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. Hiring decisions will be made on the basis of job related criteria, without discrimination or favour.
The majority of City employees are either members of CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) Local 401, IAFF (International Association of Firefighters) Local 905 or managers.
CUPE, Local 401
When a CUPE position becomes vacant, it is typically posted internally first and is only open to permanent City of Nanaimo CUPE employees. This provision provides the opportunity for our employees to advance within the organization or to move to other departments. When no internal candidate has the skills, knowledge and ability, the position may be posted externally. In that case, postings can be viewed on our Job Postings page.
IAFF, Local 905
All permanent employees of the Nanaimo Fire Services, with the exception of fire management, are members of IAFF, Local 905. The City of Nanaimo also has a number of paid-on-call firefighters who work on Protection Island.
