City Owned Property
The City’s Real Estate Staff manages public land and property on behalf of Nanaimo’s citizens and are responsible for:
- buying, selling and disposing of properties
- leasing and licensing City-owned land and buildings
- property development
The Parks, Recreation & Culture department manages properties with facilities such as the aquatic or ice centres.
Property for Sale or Lease
Council can declare properties surplus if the City no longer needs them. They can be put up for sale to the public in this case. Most of the City's surplus and saleable properties are remnant parcels from property purchases for City projects.
At times, properties become available indirectly through the City via the Annual Tax Sale.
Surplus Road Property
In some cases, surplus road property may also be available for sale upon road closure. After receiving a written application for the road closure, we review the application and determine whether the unused road can be considered surplus.
