The City of Nanaimo is policed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police under a Municipal Police Unit Agreement with the BC Minister of Justice.

The City of Nanaimo Council has approved the following policing priorities for 2012:

  1. Crime Reduction
    1. Prolific Offender Management program
    2. Liquor Control Strategy
    3. Violence in Relationships
    4. Drug Enforcement
  2. Youth
    1. School Liaison Program
    2. Youth Education
    3. Community Partnerships for Youth
  3. Traffic & Marine Services
    1. Drinking & Driving Enforcement
    2. Driving Safety (ie: seatbelts, distracted drivers, etc)
    3. Marine Patrols (ie: harbour and lakes)
  4. Downtown
    1. Liquor Control Strategy
    2. Nuisance Property Committee

Also working as part of the Nanaimo police team are two Municipal Enforcement Officers whose primary function is to enforce "Traffic and Highways Regulation Bylaw 1993 NO. 5000" and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act.
