Tourism Advisory Information

Thank you for visiting the Tourism Advisory Information page. Here you will find updates related to the delivery of tourism services in Nanaimo through 2017.

In the fall of 2016, Council approved recommendations to change how publicly-funded tourism services, previously administered by the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation (NEDC), were to be delivered in Nanaimo. At its Special Meeting on November 28, 2016, Council endorsed a phased process to determine the common vision for Nanaimo's tourism sector. At the heart of this process is a desire to create a new model that will strengthen collaboration between and integration across all parts of Nananimo's tourism sector.

Current Status

Over the next several months, a Council-appointed Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC) will work to set a common vision for Nanaimo's tourism sector by recommending objectives and milestones and providing advice to Council and staff.

While the work of the TAC is underway, a number of measures have been taken to keep the provision of publicly funded tourism services running effectively through the 2017 tourism season. These measures include:

  • The City of Nanaimo signed a service agreement with Tourism Vancouver Island (TVI) for destination marketing and development services. The agreement, which started on February 1, 2017, is set to run through March 31, 2018 and is structured to run parallel with the TAC.
  • Information services at the City-owned Nanaimo Visitor Centre are now being staffed by the City through 2017.
  • A Call for Membership for a Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC) was issued with the final deadline for submissions on April 7, 2017. Applications are now being reviewed.
  • A Request for Proposal for a Tourism Advisory consultant was issued with the final deadline for submissions on April 18, 2017.
