The City of Nanaimo recognizes the importance of cultural planning and development for generating wealth, and for the contribution to quality of life culture offers to residents and visitors. Quality of place attracts and retains artists and skilled workers who provide the creativity and innovation that will be instrumental in making Nanaimo a more sustainable and successful city.
The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department believes that engaging the local arts and culture community through networking sessions, educational forums and feedback opportunities is an important role in helping us become a more creative community. Look for these opportunities every quarter.
The Nanaimo Cultural Committee provides the department and commission direction as to how best assist in the development of local cultural resources and assists the city in how to best invest in established and emerging arts and cultural organizations by way of administering arts and cultural event grants and cultural operating grants. We also celebrate our artists and cultural leaders by presenting the Cultural Awards and Civic Merit Awards.
