Hiring Information
The majority of City employees are either managers or they are members of C.U.P.E. (Canadian Union of Public Employees) Local 401 or I.A.F.F. (International Association of Firefighters) Local 905.
CUPE, Local 401
When a CUPE position becomes vacant, it is typically posted internally and in that case, it is only open to permanent City of Nanaimo CUPE employees. This provision provides the opportunity for our employees to advance within the organization or to move to other departments.
When no internal candidate has the skills, knowledge and ability, the competition may be posted externally. In that case, postings can be viewed on our website and on the external posting board located at the Human Resources & Organizational Planning office.
I.A.F.F., Local 905
All permanent employees of the Nanaimo Fire Services, with the exception of the Fire Management, are members of the I.A.F.F. (International Association of Firefighters) Local 905. The City of Nanaimo also has a number of Paid-On-Call Firefighters who work from Fire Halls located throughout the City.
Occasionally, we may advertise externally for non-Fire-Suppression positions such as Fire Dispatchers and Fire Inspectors. On these occasions, the posting can be found on our website, and on the external posting board located at the Human Resources & Organizational Planning office.
If you are interested in becoming a Paid-On-Call Firefighter, inquiries should be directed to the Command and Business Centre, 580 Fitzwilliam Street or telephone (250) 753-7311.
