Design and Survey

DesignDesign – The Design Branch designs new and replacement infrastructure including roads, traffic lights, watermains, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, sidewalks, and trails. The staff designs capital improvement projects for the municipal utilities and streets. This section manages the computer aided drafting (CAD) standards. Consulting engineers are hired to supplement City staff when special expertise is needed or when project workload exceeds staff's availability.

Surveyors_1.jpgSurvey – The City of Nanaimo operates a survey crew which is responsible for the completion of surveys and layout work for engineering projects designed and constructed by City staff, and provides survey information for other City departments. The survey crew provides designers with in-field information so that designs reflect the existing conditions. They work closely with the Construction crews to provide survey construction layout.

The survey crew is responsible only for engineering surveying related to the City infrastructure and does not complete any legal survey work on private property. This type of work can only be done by a registered British Columbia Land Surveyor (BCLS). If you require any legal work on your property please contact a local BCLS as listed in the yellow pages of the telephone directory.
