Road Safety
The City of Nanaimo works closely with the RCMP and ICBC as we apply the three "E's" (education, enforcement and engineering) in making our roads safe.
Engineering Support Services has a dedicated traffic technologist who is responsible for assisting residents with their road safety complaints such as requests for stop signs, crosswalks, site visibility issues, speeding and road closures. Responding to the residents includes a technical review of on-site conditions, regulations and guidelines, to ensure traffic warning and regulatory signs, road markings and pedestrian crossings are properly placed for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
We also regulate activities which occur on city streets such as the movement of oversize/overweight trucks with GVW of 13.700 kg or over, road closures for special events such as parades, fun runs and special gatherings, for TV or movie filming, and contractors and companies working within our streets.
