Social Issues & Community Safety

The homelessness crisis in Nanaimo is a complex matter affected by many factors. As a municipality, our responsibility is limited by legislation and resources, but we continue to advocate to the provincial and federal government for their commitment and support in the areas that fall under their mandate such as addressing the opioid crisis, addictions, mental health and housing affordability. The City is committed to working with several partners, including all levels of government, to each take a leadership role and address the responsibilities and services that fall under their jurisdiction. On this page, you will find a number of helpful links to City programs, resources and contacts you can reach out to and the areas of responsibility that are within their control.
