Notice of Potential Privacy Breach

(Nanaimo BC, March 15, 2023)

On Friday, March 10, 2023, the City of Nanaimo became aware of a potential privacy breach involving the Computrol service, specifically users on the Simcom platform. Simcom is a cloud services product used for Nanaimo's water hauler fill stations.

For an unknown period of time, a limited number of Simcom clients with access to their administrator console had the ability to view the customer data of other Simcom users, including the City of Nanaimo's Simcom clients. This information was only potentially accessible internally by Simcom administrative users and was not publicly available.

The vulnerability was an internal software bug existing within the Simcom environment and not caused by an external attack. Changes to the software have been implemented to resolve the issue.
