The Legislation

To ensure fairness, openness, and accessibility, local elections and assent voting are conducted in accordance with very strict rules. The rules and procedures are set out in Part 4 of the Local Government Act and in the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act and associated regulations. Other legislation: Community Charter.


On Saturday, July 8, 2017, the City of Nanaimo held a By-Election to fill a vacancy on Council. The successful candidate will hold office until October 2018 which is the end of Council’s current term. Elections BC is responsible for receiving and reviewing all Campaign Financing Disclosure Statements.
