1. Support & Facilitate the development of a Nanaimo Social and Health Network.
2012: Convene meeting of community stakeholders to identify committee scope and roles and responsibilities.
2013: Work with community stakeholders to commence update of 2004 Social Development Strategy, including updating inventory of current services.
2014-2015: Work with community stakeholders to complete Social Development Strategy. Update and implement priority action items.
Update (as of December 31, 2012): An initial meeting with community stakeholders was held on December 10, 2012.
Update (as of March 31, 2013): Four meetings of the steering committee have been held since January.
Update (as of June 30, 2013): Hosted three community workshops with over 60 representatives of the non-profit sector to identify social issues in Nanaimo. The Steering Committee will review the results of the community workshops and recommend a course of action.
Update (as of September 30, 2013): Staff are preparing a report on findings and recommendations arising from the three workshops with community based service providers that were hosted in June. The report on the findings and recommendations from the workshops is scheduled to go to Council on October 28, 2013 (since completed).
Update (as of December 31, 2013): Council received the report “Social & Health Forums: Findings and Recommendations” at its meeting of October 28, 2013. Staff has been directed to revise the City's Social Development Strategy and the accompanying Social Status Report. The Social Planning Advisory Committee will host an annual Social & Health Forum to facilitate collaboration amongst the not-for-profit sector to address key issues.
A revised Social Development Strategy and Social Status Report are due to be presented to Council in January 2014. The 2014 Social & Health Forum is anticipated to be scheduled in the Spring of 2014. The latter is dependent upon the new committee structure in the Social and Protective Services Department.
Update (as of March 31, 2014): The Nanaimo Social and Health Network Steering Committee reviewed the revised Social Development Strategy and recommended some changes be made to the document. Those changes have been made and the Steering Committee is scheduled to ratify those changes in Spring 2014. The Council will then consider the updated Social Development strategy. A Social and Health Forum is scheduled for Fall 2014. The latter is contingent on finalization of changes to advisory committee structures by Council.
Update (as of June 30, 2014): A variety of sub-structures have developed to further the work of the Nanaimo Social and Health Network. These groups are actively addressing specific elements within the framework of the Social Development Strategy. The Social and Health Network Steering Committee will convene in the Fall to review plans for a forum.
Update (as of September 30, 2014): A number of sub structures of the network have been formed to address specific areas of the Social Development Strategy; a Child Poverty working group, a sex trade task force, a “vital Signs“ partnership, a Youth Advisory Council and an update to the Community Plan to end Homelessness. To address areas identified in the Vital Signs report and through the Successful Cities project.
2. Participate in the Successful Cities workshops and collaborate with the Chamber to evaluate, and where appropriate, to monitor existing and future actions.
2012: Participate in workshop in October.
2013-2015: Act as City liaison in implementation of any future actions.
Update (as of December 31, 2012): The Director of Strategic Relationships participated in the Successful Cities workshop in October.
Update (as of March 31, 2013): Have been preparing for the transition of Successful Cities from the Chamber of Commerce to a community driven committee administered by the Chamber of Commerce, the City and Vancouver Island University.
Update (as of June 30, 2013): "Inspire Nanaimo" Committee established to build upon elements of a Successful City as defined through community consultation. Website created.
Update (as of September 30, 2013): A Steering Committee of “Inspire Nanaimo: A Successful Cities Partnership” has been formed with representation from a cross-section of Nanaimo. The Steering Committee sponsored speaker Todd Latham who spoke on “Rejuvenating Our Cities.” The Committee is reviewing priorities for moving the process forward.
Update (as of December 31, 2013): Inspire Nanaimo Committee held a two day retreat, developed Committee Terms of Reference, drafted a work plan and identified funding needs. The Committee plans to finalize its work plan, create a budget and identify potential funders. The Implementation of 2014 strategies are scheduled to begin.
Update (as of March 31, 2014): The Inspire Nanaimo Committee is undergoing structural changes with the founding partners and evaluating its purpose and outcomes to re-define the next steps. Inspire Nanaimo has been nominated for a "Global Best Award: Innovative and Creative Partnerships" through the Conference Board of Canada. Inspire Nanaimo is in the process of planning Spring and Fall events.
Update (as of June 30, 2014): The founding partners of Inspire Nanaimo (City of Nanaimo, Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, Vancouver Island University) have been meeting with other organizations with similar goals to discuss how to work collaboratively. Inspire Nanaimo will work with other organizations to provide support for upcoming events.
Update (as of September 30, 2014): The founding partners of Inspire Nanaimo (City of Nanaimo, Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, Vancouver Island University) continue to meet with other organizations with similar goals to discuss collaborative opportunities. Inspire Nanaimo will work with other organizations to provide support and/or partner in initiatives that inspire Nanaimo. Inspire Nanaimo will meet with the Chamber of Commerce Successful Cities Committee to compare progress to date.
3. Review & define municipal role in the facilitation and maintenance of a vibrant “community benefit sector” in Nanaimo.
