Relief Fire Dispatcher

The City of Nanaimo is seeking a Relief Fire Dispatcher. This position is responsible for receiving, transmitting, processing and documenting all radio and telephone requests for emergency or other services provided by Nanaimo Fire Rescue. In addition, there is a variety of related clerical and typing duties.
Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate must possess a Grade 12 diploma and have post-secondary education in a relevant field such as emergency communications and/or public safety. An equivalent combination of skills and experience may also be considered.
The incumbent will have a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and minimum typing speed of 50 wpm. Preferable qualifications include Basic First Aid and CPR C along with knowledge of basic fire codes, information retention systems and an understanding of mapping and preplan systems. Successful candidates must be able to communicate clearly, deal with stressful situations and rapidly changing conditions, handle multiple tasks within short time frames and maintain composure and control during emergencies. Experience in dispatch, operating a busy switchboard and customer service are desirable skills. Practical and/or written tests may be required.
Compensation and Benefits
The wage rate is as per the collective agreement and there is an additional 10% in lieu of benefits.
THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY FIRE FIGHTER POSITION. THESE POSITIONS INVOLVE SHIFT WORK COVERING A 24-HOUR, 7-DAY OPERATION.
HOURS OF WORK will be 0 - 48 hours per week, normally consisting of:
- Day Shifts: 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
- Night Shifts: 6:00 pm – 8:00 am
