Job Summary

The City of Nanaimo is seeking 17 temporary part-time Recreation Assistant II - Arenas. Under the supervision of senior recreation staff, the incumbents will perform a variety of tasks involved with the operation of the Arena Skate Shop and assist staff with organizing a variety of ice/dry recreational activities and special events including preparing equipment, materials, and supplies for public skating sessions, and assisting with the general public.

Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent and an interest in recreation and/or community service as demonstrated by volunteer work, participation, or previous employment is required. Applicants must have an excellent skating ability, and knowledge of skate repair, adjustment, and sharpening would be an asset. Possession of a valid Emergency or Standard First Aid and CPR “C” certificate from Red Cross or St. John Ambulance is required (online certifications will not be accepted), as well as a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a unionized position. $17.65 per hour (Jan 2019 Rate). Hours of work will be 0 – 20 hours per week. Shift work will be involved (including evenings and weekends). It is anticipated that these vacancies will be from September 2019 to March 2020.
