Job Summary

The City of Nanaimo is a rapidly growing community with a population of approximately 98,000. Nestled between the mountains and the ocean, on the east coast of Vancouver Island, we are centrally located, about 1½ hours from Victoria and 2 hours from Vancouver by ferry. With a university and well-developed parks, recreational, cultural and social amenities, Nanaimo is truly an extraordinary place to live. 

As the leader of Nanaimo Fire Rescue and a member of the City of Nanaimo’s senior leadership team, the Fire Chief plays a critical role in ensuring public safety through the delivery of fire suppression, specialty rescue teams, medical response, safety education and fire prevention services. The Fire Chief has overall responsibility for the operations of five fire stations across the city, employing more than 105 IAFF employees and administrative team members.

The Fire Chief must bring proven skills as an outstanding leader and communicator who can create an environment that fosters excellence and respects diversity in background and thinking.  A proven relationship builder, the Chief will have a track record of partnerships with other first responder and public safety agencies and a demonstrated ability to work with senior managers, front-line staff, union leaders, elected officials and the community to deliver on the department’s mandate and to protect the wellness of the staff. The Fire Chief understands the complexities of a growing city, and can demonstrate experience working to address the implications of homelessness, social disorder, and mental health and drug addiction issues.

The successful candidate will exemplify leadership in all aspects of the role, from fire prevention and public education to ensuring the continued growth and development of the City’s successful fire training academy. We are seeking individuals with the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Fire Administration or related discipline.
  • Eight years’ of progressively responsible related experience, including significant experience in a fire management role.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A Master’s Degree, Fire Officer IV designation or Executive Fire Chief Officer (ECFO) designation is a benefit.
