Economic Development Investment
Staff will be preparing a report regarding a request from the Mid Island Business Initiative for a $48,000 investment over six months for Economic Development activities.

Budget Carryforwards
A report outlining 2018 budget carryforwards was received for information.

Funding Requests
Recommendations were made for Council to approve the following:

  • A grant to the Nanaimo Volunteer & Information Centre Society in the amount of $1,551.46 to cover the facility rental cost of Beban Park Auditorium for their 2019 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, and continued coverage for this annual event for the duration of this Council’s term.
  • Additional funding from the Overdose Emergency Response Centre for Nanaimo’s Community Action Team to support Indigenous community members.
  • Funding from Employment and Social Development Canada under the New Horizons for Seniors program to continue existing Seniors Connect projects until Dec. 31, 2019.

Cultural Facility Lease Terms Extended
A recommendation was made for Council to direct Staff to lengthen the default term of leases for City-owned cultural facilities to 10 years, with the option to renew for an additional 10 years. This change will enable groups to be eligible to apply for grant funding from senior levels of government requiring long-term lease agreements.

Harbour City Theatre Update
A report outlining maintenance and asset management updates to the Harbour City Theatre at 25 Victoria Road was received for information.

Travel Assistance Grants
Recommendations were made for Council to approve the following:

  • $600 in funding to the Dover Bay Secondary Girls Basketball team for twelve players to attend the Grade 9 Girls Basketball Provincial Championships in Port Moody, BC.
  • $2,000 in funding to the Vancouver Island Special Needs Hockey Association for twenty players to attend the Southern California Special Needs Hockey Festival in Valencia, California.

The process of approving future Travel Assistance Grants will be simplified with a recommendation made for Council to approve a change that authorizes Staff to approve grant requests, with a report outlining bi-annual updates to be provided to the Finance and Audit Committee.

National Junior A Hockey Championship bid support
A recommendation to support the Nanaimo Clippers’ bid to host the Royal Bank Cup National Junior A Hockey Championship in 2021 was approved, with an agreement to commit up to $30,000 if the bid is successful.

Infrastructure and Asset Repairs
A report outlining necessary repairs to the dock and ramp at Gallows Point on Protection Island was received for information.

A recommendation was made for Council to approve adding $32,000 to the 2019 budget for a LED score clock at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. It will be funded from the Facility Development Reserve, along with a $5,000 private contribution from the Nanaimo Riptides Swim Club.

A report outlining necessary repairs to the track at the Rotary Bowl was received for information.
