Join us this fall for recreation programs found throughout the community!

    We have arts, crafts, dancing, cooking, first aid, fitness, yoga, wellness, special interest...and so much more! Check back here on a regular basis, as we will be adding programs as they are confirmed.

    DROP-IN SPORTS & POTTERY 

    A few swimming, skating, drop-in sports, weight room workouts and pottery sessions are starting up again with City of Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Culture. All sessions must be pre-registered and pre-paid up to 72 hours in advance. This new system in place will limit participants to comply with the Provincial Mass Gathering Order and give adequate time between sessions for staff to clean and sanitize the facility.

    There are three ways to pre-register:

    • Online: visit www.nanaimo.ca/goto/PRC-Registration and choose the appropriate drop-in activity. Clients will need to create an account, and payment is done through Visa or Mastercard. This is the preferred method as it is the most efficient.
    • Telephone: call 250-756-5200 and book using a Visa or Mastercard.
    • In Person: stop in at Oliver Woods Community Centre, Bowen Park Complex or Nanaimo Aquatic Centre to book with a front desk clerk using cash, Visa or Mastercard.

    If a session is full, it will not show as available to book when looking or trying to book online.

    In person registration is available at the following facilities once they open to the public during the following times:

    CHILDREN'S MONTHLY PLAY & LEARN

    Our monthly “Play & Learn” early years programs, led by experienced and dedicated staff, will teach your child how enjoyable learning can be! Through interactive play, songs, stories, crafts and basic academic prep activities, your child will develop skills that will help prepare them for Kindergarten and for years to come.  Please send you child dressed appropriately for all weather conditions.

    Let's Explore Linley Valley Gyro Park (3-6 yrs)

    Let’s explore Linley Valley Gyro Park and the amazing wildlife that lives in around the marsh land and trees. Wander the trail system that weaves between two marshes, and see how they are connected and who calls this place home. This is a parent participation class. Meet at Linley Gyro Park.

    Under the Surface (3-6 yrs)

    Did you know that there is a mysterious world living just beneath the surface of our oceans and streams? Come explore with us in search of these critters and learn about the life surrounding the shoreline. This is a parent participation class. 

     Meet at Piper Lagoon Park.

    Trees & Leaves (3-6 yrs)

    Fall is a wonderful time to drink in the beauty of trees, especially those whose leaves change colour and drop to the ground.  Join us for fall crafts and to learn about why trees have leaves and why they change colours in the fall.

    This is a parent participation class. Meet at the Upper Picnic Shelter at Bowen Park.

    Wiggling Worms (3-6 yrs)

    Are worms really slimy? Have you ever wondered what a worm eats or which end is their head? Why do they come out in the rain? Come learn with us through games, crafts and stories. This is a parent participation class.  Meet at the Lower Picnic Shelter at Bowen Park.

    Winter - How Plants & Animals Survive (3-6 yrs)

    Have you ever wondered what happens to the plants and animals over the winter months when it’s cold out side. Come find out. Meet at the top of the stairs across from the parking lot off Rock City Road. This is a parent participation class. Held at Linley Valley Park.

    Dance with Me (6-18 months)

    Babies and toddlers will develop a love for music, movement and building friendships through fun songs, simple actions and instruments. Parent participation is required. Held at Beban Social Centre.

    Dance with Me (18 months-3 yrs)

    This can be your child’s first introduction to ballet in a fun-filled environment. Children will develop balance and coordination while learning simple dance moves to music! Children should wear leotards, shorts,  and dance slippers if available. If not, then bare feet is acceptable. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Nasya Moore.

    Baby Ballet - The Next Steps (3-5 yrs)

    This is a class for little dancers who have already taken Baby Ballet. This is a continuation of level one, including more steps, music, and movement. Children should wear leotards, shorts,  and dance slippers if available. If not, then bare feet is acceptable. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Nasya Moore.

    Musical Dance Theatre (3-5 yrs)

    Time to get theatrical! This program is based on dancing, acting and singing. Children will learn proper dance fundamentals. Children should wear leotards, shorts,  and dance slippers if available. If not, then bare feet is acceptable.  Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Nasya Moore.

    Intro to Hip Hop (3-4 yrs)

    Touch on the basics of hip hop and learn new styles like grooving, popping, b-boying and more. Held at Vibe Dance Studio.

    Home Alone (10-12 yrs)

    This is designed for children who may be ready to be home alone. The new format for this program includes establishing rules and routines, handling emergency situations, personal safety, basic first aid and much more. Price includes a student manual. Held at Beban Social Centre.

    Progressive Tennis (5-7 yrs)

    Learn tennis in a fun cooperative team environment using smaller racquets, lighter balls and smaller courts so kids can develop more quickly. All equipment provided. Clean gym shoes required. Held at Westwood Tennis Club

    Progressive Tennis (8-11 yrs)

    Learn tennis in a fun cooperative team environment using smaller racquets, lighter balls and smaller courts so kids can develop more quickly. All equipment provided. Clean gym shoes required. Held at Westwood Tennis Club

    Street Smarts (11-15 yrs)

    Learn basic bike maintenance, rules and regulations of the road, and have fun gaining confidence through cycling games and much more. All participants must have a certified biking helmet, full functioning bike and basic riding skills.  Bring a snack, water and weather appropriate clothing. Held at Beban Park Social Centre.

    Piano - Private Beginner Lessons (5 yrs+)

    Basketball Skills and Drills (6-9 yrs)

    Kick, dribble, pass and score! Join us for some basketball, and learn the basics in this introductory class where the focus is FUN! Held at Harewood Covered Sport Court.

    Soccer Skills and Drills (6-9 yrs)

    Kick, dribble, pass and score! Join us for some soccer, and learn the basics in this introductory class where the focus is FUN! Held at Harewood Covered Sport Court.

    Yoga for Kids (6-10 yrs)

    Kids' yoga assists children in their focus skills, teaches self-awareness, builds self-esteem, self-respect, and is overall empowering. Give the gift of yoga. Parent participation is not required; please provide child with yoga mat. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Gypsy Hart.

    Zumba for Kids (4-6 yrs)

    Zumba® Kids classes feature kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba® choreography. We break down the steps, add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure. Helps develop a healthy lifestyle and incorporate fitness as a natural part of children's lives by making fitness fun. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Shandra Mayes.

    Karate (4-7 yrs)

    Learn to perform basic karate moves and improve motor skills. Designed to teach self-discipline with courtesy and respect strongly emphasized. Held at Shima Karate.

    Karate (8-12 yrs)

    Now kids move into the older program training twice a week they will start learning katas, and self-defense drills. Held at Shima Karate.

    Ninjas Taekwondo (6-9 yrs)

    Kids will learn kicks, punches, blocks and self-defense skills through fun activities that develop coordination, balance, flexibility, strength and agility. Increase body awareness, focus, concentration and self-confidence. Designed as an introductory program, children will be provided the tools and encouraged to progress to higher levels upon completion. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Master Moy.

    Tigers Taekwondo (8-13 yrs)

    Students will build self-confidence while learning different kicks, punches, blocks and self-defense skills. They will learn anti-bullying strategies and increase mental and physical strength. There is a strong emphasis on life skills, such as respect, discipline, focus, integrity and perseverance. Upon completion of the program the students will be well equipped to progress to higher levels of teachings. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Master Moy.

    This program is suitable for both beginner and continuing fencers. Focus will be on developing skills through games, activities, and drills. In addition to being an exiciting sport, fencing challenges both the body and the mind. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Georgia Newsome.

    Rock Climbing (6-12 yrs)

    Come out and give indoor rock climbing a try. We provide all the gear and staff to introduce kids to the exciting sport of rock climbing. No experience necessary. Do it for the fitness and the fun! Held at Romper Room Gym.

    Frosty Frolic Camp (5-10 yrs)

    Play games, get crafty and make new friends. Register for the days you need. Cost is $42/day and is held at Beban Social Centre.

    Leaders in Training (LIT)

    Since 1982, the Leaders in Training (LIT) program has been helping youth in Nanaimo learn basic job skills and become volunteer leaders in the community. Leaders in Training participants receive training about what it means to be a leader and have a job, as well as how to work with children. After completing their orientation, they will attend “LIT University” and delve into the specifics of leading games, working as a team, painting faces/making balloon animals and basic resume writing. Once they have completed training, LIT’s will choose from a variety of placement options around Nanaimo and will volunteer between 50 and 90 hours. Participants MUST be in grade 8 in September 2020 and be 13 (by December 31st, 2020) - no exceptions. * Please note participants must sign up for “LIT University” (Children 101, Clowning 101, On the Job 101 and Teamwork 101) as part of the program that takes place from October 19-22.     Quest Leadership

    Youth in the Quest program will continue to grow their leadership skills. In addition to attending additional workshops and assisting with training the LIT volunteers. Prerequisite for this program is successful completion of the LIT program. Quest participants will need to attend 1 or 2 of the “LIT University” courses to help the Program Leader train the LIT’s. While you don’t need to pre-register for these workshops, please ensure you have some evening availability between October 19-22, as participation is a requirement for Quest.

    Pottery Wheel (13-17 yrs)

    For those with little or no previous experience working with clay. Learn the basic techniques that will help you create pots, vases, bowls and pretty much anything that can be thrown on a pottery wheel. Clay, glazes and firings are included in cost. Held at Bowen Park Pottery Studio.

    Youth Art Attack (12-18 yrs)

    This fun and interactive art class will explore a variety of styles of art such as drawing, painting and much more! Held at Beban Social Centre.

    POW! Intro to Making Comics (11-18 yrs)

    Welcome to the art of making comics! In this introductory course, learn the basics of drawing comic book characters...from cartoony to heroic and from goofy to action-packed! You will learn techniques on figure proportion, facial expressions, action and movement, as well as location and perspective drawing techniques. No previous drawing experience is required. Please bring your own drawing supplies for this class. Held at NAC in the Jack Little Room.

    Babysitter Training (11-15 yrs)

    The Red Cross Babysitting Course covers everything from managing difficult behaviours to essential content on leadership and professional conduct. This curriculum provides first aid information and how to give appropriate care in the event of an emergency. Held at Beban Social Centre.

    Youth Badminton (12-19 yrs)

    Take your badminton skills to the next level. Players should have two years of experience in the Junior Badminton program (or equivalent). Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre.

    Sports Sampler (11-18 yrs)

    Come shoot some hoops! Our coach will coach the fundamentals of basketball while including fun, active games and free play! Please arrive to the program active gear and indoor sports shoes. Held in Departure Bay Activity Centre.

    Basketball (11-18 yrs)

    Come shoot some hoops at Oliver Woods Community Centre! Our coach will coach the fundamentals of basketball while including fun active games and free play! Please arrive to the program in active gear and wear indoor sports shoes.

    Floor Hockey (11-17 yrs)

    Come join us in our new Covered Sports Court at Harewood Centennial Park for some floor hockey skills and drills. Each session participants will learn the fundamentals of floor hockey, play skill building games and finish the session with a shoot out.

    Intro to Fun Fitness (11-18 yrs)

    Join our coach for an introduction to fitness with a focus on fun! This class will cycle through a variety of different activities, such as weight training, cardio, stretching and cross training. The group will work on learning new fundamental movement skills while having a great time. Held in Departure Bay Activity Centre.

    Taekwondo and Hapkido (12-19 yrs)

    Learn the Korean art of self-defense which places a strong emphasis on circular movement, redirection, and self confidence. Our highly qualified 8th degree black belt, Grand Master Kim strives to maximize your potential by maintaining a traditional foundation based upon physical well being and mental integrity. Held at World Tae Kwon Do (4300 Wellington Rd).

    Fencing (14 yrs+)

    This program is for all levels. Beginner fencers receive weekly instruction in the basic skills of foil fencing and will be introduced to sabre and epee. Experienced fencers receive instructions tailored to their needs in any of the three weapons (foil, sabre, epee). There will be plenty of opportunity to challenge other fencers either using practice or electric equipment. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Georgia Newsome.

    Karate (13 yrs to adult)

    This program is geared for older kids and adults Traditional Karate training. Held at Shima Karate.

    ADULT ARTS/CRAFTS PROGRAMS

    Public Single Session Pottery -$12/session

    Formally "Drop-in Pottery", all participants will be able to register at a maximum of 3 days in advance for each session. The Bowen Park Pottery Studio has the tools, equipment and supplies available for the public to work independently. Children, when accompanied by an adult, are welcome (both must register). No instruction is provided. Clay may be purchased for $32 (including tax) per 22 pound bag and includes all firing and glazing fees. Space is limited and is in effect from September 15 to December 30.

    Pottery Wheel - Adult Beginner

    Ballroom & Latin Dance (Beginners Continuation)

    A quick review of basic techniques covered in this beginner class will be followed by more advanced variations. At least one ballroom and one Latin dance will be taught in each session. Partners only. Held at Beban Social Centre.

    A continuous class for those who wish to learn more on the ten International Ballroom and Latin American dances where at least one ballroom and one Latin dance will be taught in each class. Partners only. Held at Beban Social Centre.

    Impress your friends on the dance floor with the cha cha, rumba and samba. No previous dancing required. Couples only. Held at Bowen Complex Auditorium.

    Jive & Swing - Beginner

    Ballroom Formation Team

    This is a continuation session for the Ballroom Formation Team. You will work towards performing at larger events and competitions. New participants are asked to contact the instructor. Held at Beban Social Centre.

     

    FIRST AID PROGRAMS

    Emergency Childcare First Aid

    This Red Cross first aid course is designed for parents and caregivers of children. Approved by the Provincial Childcare Licensing Board, this course covers CPR B (Child & Infant) and AED training for children and infants in addition to first aid skills, including choking, breathing emergencies and wound care. Re-training is recommended every three years. Held at Beban Park Social Centre.

    Standard First Aid

    This course includes all of the Red Cross Emergency First Aid and CPR-C instruction on day one, before covering head and spine injuries, bone and joint injuries, environmental conditions, poisons, and sudden medical emergencies on day two. This course is recognized by the Provincial Child Care Licensing Board, BCRPA, and worksites in Alberta. It is also a prerequisite for Lifeguard certifications. Re-training is recommended every three years. Held at Beban Park Social Centre.

    Emergency First Aid

    This Red Cross first aid course provides training in the skills necessary to deal with breathing and circulatory emergencies.  It includes CPR-C (adult, child, & infant) and instruction on the use of AED's,  Epi pens and metered dose inhalers. Treatment for wounds, bleeding, unconsciousness, and shock will also be covered. This course is also accepted by BCRPA for fitness professionals. Re-training is recommended every three years.     CPR C/AED (Adult, Child, Infant)

    This Red Cross CPR course is for general knowledge, workplace, lifeguards, nurses, nursing students or any student requiring this for further training or entry into a school program.  The content includes prevention, signs and symptoms of a heart attack, angina and stroke.  Adult, child  and infant CPR as well as AED training, unconscious and unconscious choking and deadly bleeding will also be covered. Fee includes a manual and a pocket mask to take home. Upon completion, you will receive a temporary certificate and a virtual certificate will be available to print after completion.     CPR C & AED Recertification

    This Red Cross CPR course is designed for those who want to re-certify their CPR-C certificate. The course covers CPR skills for infant, child, and adult; choking emergencies (conscious and unconscious); and airway management techniques. Certification also includes AED training and a pocket mask to take home. Please bring proof of your CPR-C award current within three years. Upon completion, you will receive a temporary certificate and a virtual certificate will be available to print after completion.  Re-training is recommended every three years.     Spanish Beginners

    Learn vocabulary, grammar, speaking skills and practical dialogue. Participants with no knowledge of Spanish should feel comfortable at this level. Held at Bowen Complex. Taught by Martha Fortin.

    Spanish for Travelers - Beginners 2

    This is for those who have taken a beginner level or have previous knowledge of Spanish. The emphasis is on practical situations useful for traveling to Spanish-speaking countries. Held at Bowen Complex. Taught by Martha Fortin.

    Spanish for Travelers - Intermediate

    This conversational course concentrates on Spanish culture, tenses, idiomatic expressions and practical situations. It is an excellent way to prepare for traveling and for everyday communication. Previous Spanish study in level 2 or equivalent knowledge is essential to participate. Held at Bowen Complex. Taught by Martha Fortin.

    Spanish Conversation

    This course will emphasize listening and conversational skills. Participants should have prior experience with a beginner and intermediate level. Held at Bowen Complex. Taught by Martha Fortin.

    Spanish in the Morning - Conversation

    This course is designed to improve oral fluency through guided conversations and presentations in Spanish. Expand your vocabulary, familiarize yourself with a variety of scenarios in the Hispanic world and develop a solid foundation for more advanced courses in Spanish. Held at Bowen Complex.     Spanish on Saturday - Level 1

    An intensive conversational course for those who have little or no previous knowledge of Spanish. You will listen and speak Spanish from the first day as you quickly gain basic conversation skills.     Street Smarts for Commuter Cycling Skills: E-Bikes (16 yrs+)

    Are you wanting to feel comfortable riding your bike to work or school? Learn to become a street smart daily bicycle commuter, including basic bike maintenance, rules and regulations of the road, common cycling routes, rider visibility and safety, road positioning, traffic lights, proper bike set up, effective bike handling, proper braking, understanding your gears. Gain confidence through cycling activities and real life scenarios  All participants must have a certified biking helmet, full functioning bike and basic riding skills. Bring snack, water and weather appropriate clothing. Held at Beban Park Social Centre.

    Bicycle Maintenance for Beginners (16 yrs+)

    Do you like riding bikes, but you find you know nothing about how they work?  Learn the ABCs of how to fix a flat, repair your chain, and give your bike some love. We will cover gears, brakes, tires and more!  Please bring your own bike to tune up! Held at Departure Bay Activity Centre.

    Trail Discovery Stroll & Stretch

    Learn something new about the trails in your community while exploring and enjoying fresh air and good company. Complete your hike through one of our parks with some balance work and a good stretch.  Must wear good walking/hiking shoes and be in good physical health.  Locations will vary, first class will meet in front of the Nanaimo Ice Centre. We will be keeping our numbers in this class small so we can maintain adequate spacing while we walk (or feel free to wear a mask to this class)

    Karate (13 yrs to adult)

    This program is geared for older kids and adults Traditional Karate training, sparring and self defense is taught, fitness, strength development and flexibility are part of the curriculum. Held at Shima Karate.

    Mom's Yoga/Karate

    This program is geared for any moms or any women that wants to try a combination of yoga and karate. It is a great way to get in shape while learning to defend yourself in a great atmosphere with other interested individuals. Held at Shima Karate.

    Fencing (14 yrs+)

    This program is for all levels. Beginner fencers receive weekly instruction in the basic skills of foil fencing and will be introduced to sabre and epee. Experienced fencers receive instructions tailored to their needs in any of the three weapons (foil, sabre, epee). There will be plenty of opportunity to challenge other fencers either using practice or electric equipment. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Georgia Newsome.

    Iaido (16 yrs+)

    Iaido is a Japanese martial art with a long history. It is referred to as a “moving zen” because of its focus on precise, controlled, fluid movements.  Held at Departure Bay Activity Centre.

    Indoor Tennis Lessons - Beginner

    Participants will learn and practice serving, ground strokes and net play, as well as learning the rules of tennis. Please bring your own tennis racquet, water bottle and clean court shoes. Held at North Island Tennis Academy.

      South Island Sight See Circle Tour

      Enjoy a scenic day tour on the Pacific Marine Route departing Nanaimo to Victoria, Victoria to Sooke, Sooke to Port Renfrew and Port Renfrew to Lake Cowichan. This is one of the only circle driving tours on the island. There will be many stops for breaks and photo opportunities.  Please bring lunch and snacks or money for lunch. Rated: Easy. Meet at Beban Park in the Breezeway. Led by Track Outdoor Adventures.

      Snowshoe at Mt. Washington

      Includes park pass, snowshoe rental, transportation and guided snowshoe easy trek- fun in the snow with a moderate workout! If you can walk you can snowshoe! Rated: Moderate. Guests should be able to snowshoe approximately 3 to 4 hours (2 to 3 km) without difficulty. Please bring lunch and snacks or money for lunch. Meet at Beban Park in the Breezeway. Led by Track Outdoor Adventures.

      ADULT YOGA/FITNESS PROGRAMS

      HIIT

      High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of interval training, a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. Join the group for fast-paced and fun workouts that generally consist of a warm-up period followed by repetitions of high-intensity exercises separated by medium intensity exercises for active recovery, then a cool down period. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Holly Monaghan.

      HIIT to Fit

      Do you like the idea of H.I.I.T (High Intensity Interval Training), but you are not sure if they are for you? This is the perfect introduction to this type of fitness training. Building your strength, skills and confidence here to advance to the evening H.I.I.T class. Held at Departure Bay Activity Centre. Taught by Kim Ross.

      Total Body Fitness

      Whether you are just starting out in fitness or are an advanced student, you are welcome here. Your fitness level will be challenged.       Tabata

      Tabata training is a type of high intensity interval training designed to get your heart rate up in that hard anaerobic zone for short periods of time. Workouts will include cardio, strength training and core stability work using a variety of fun and dynamic exercises and drills. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Angel Jones.

      Full Figured Circuit Plus

      Exercise at circuit stations with a focus on strength, balance, and light cardio. One person at each station which be timed to keep proper distancing as we move station to station. There will be group segments and a stretch component lead by the instructor to keep things varied and fun! Please bring weights if you have them but they are not necessary. Beginner to intermediate levels. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Tara McNeil.

      Stretch, Balance, Build

      This class will be perfect for you if you are looking to improve your balance, become more flexible and build or maintain your strength. Focus will be on balancing exercises and poses and will be adding a weight component for strength but also to allow the poses to be more challenging and beneficial. Moves are slow and focused, and there will be a chair available for those that need it to sit or balance. The stretch can be done on the floor or in a chair. Please bring your own weights if you have them and your own mat if you want to go to the floor. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Tara McNeil.

      Stretch & Tone

      This class has two light cardio segments and the rest of the class will focus on flexibility, balance, core, and strength. We will use weights and your body to improve all these areas. Many exercises will cover compound moves and there will be a chair to help with balance if needed and core work. Bring your own weights if you have them, but they are not necessary. Beginner to intermediate levels. No floor work in this class. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Tara McNeil.

      Rookie Boot Camp - Outdoors

      This is fun and challenging fitness class incorporates cardio, strength and flexibility with various levels so you can work at your own pace and get a great workout! Variations of circuit training, boot camp, traditional aerobics and dance combinations will keep your body moving and improving. This class is for beginner to intermediate levels. Please bring a mat or towel to use on the ground. Held at Rotary Field House grounds.

      Rookie Boot Camp

      This is fun and challenging fitness class incorporates cardio, strength and flexibility with various levels so you can work at your own pace and get a great workout! Variations of circuit training, boot camp, traditional aerobics and dance combinations will keep your body moving and improving. This class is for beginner to intermediate levels. Please bring a mat or towel to use on the ground. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre, and taught by Angel Jones.

      Rock Your Body Boot Camp - Outdoors

      This program will take place entirely outdoors. No equipment will be provided; however, you are encourage to bring your own mat and/or towel and a set of hand weights if you have them. If you do not have weights, not a problem - the class will adjust, and you will still get an excellent workout! Held at Beban Park Tennis Courts.

      Rock Your Body Boot Camp

      Finish your day with a workout that will leave you feeling energized and rejuvenated. Workouts will include cardio, strength training and core stability work, using a variety of fun and dynamic exercises and drills. Held at Oliver Wood Community Centre. Taught by Heidi Robinson.

      Belly Fit 

      This is a holistic fitness experience that blends the body, mind, and spirit to offer an extraordinary exercise experience. Scorch calories in a fun and easy cardio and dance infused workout. The second half of the class brings sculpting, toning, and tightening with Pilates, yoga stretch and mindful meditation. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Myah Rogerson.

      Pilates

      Mat Pilates offers you an effective series of exercises to strengthen and tone your core. You will create long and lean muscles and improve your posture and balance. Pilates increases your awareness of alignment and breath while creating greater flexibility in your joints and muscles. Modifications for all levels will be offered for all levels. Pilates is a great compliment to your existing classes. It helps a wide range of individuals at all stages of life. It is a low impact, strengthening series of exercises that is easily adaptable for all levels of ability and age. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Jane Bockman.

      Yogalates

      A cross between Yoga and Pilates, this class will combine Pilates and Yoga for a total body workout focused on toning the glutes, thighs and stomach. This low-impact workout will increase your fitness level. Develop your core strength and stabilization through Pilates poses, and improve your flexibility, muscular strength, posture and alignment through Yoga/Pilates poses, breathing and relaxation.       Gentle Yoga

      This program is a great introduction to yoga poses in a Hatha-based yoga class combined with core conditioning and stabilizing exercises to improve posture and alignment. You will enjoy the benefits of increased flexibility and deep relaxation.  Leave feeling taller, leaner and more relaxed. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. 

      Hatha Yoga

      This rejuvenating class will release tension from the muscles from everyday life and sports activities. Learn to breathe deeply while experiencing a flow of postures to stimulate the body physically and mentally. Through this practice you enhance flexibility, increase muscle tone and concentration, detoxify the organs and feel a deep state of relaxation. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Melissa Hill.

      Relax and Renew Yoga

      Learn the basic yoga poses (asanas) taught in Hatha Yoga style.  Each class focuses on alignment, balance, strength, flexibility & breathing exercises concluding with a short relaxation and meditation period.  Please wear comfortable clothing and bare feet are preferred.  Please bring a water bottle and blanket for the relaxation period.       Men's Yoga

      Men, here is a yoga program only for you. Yoga will improve your flexibility, core strength and balance.       60+ FITNESS PROGRAMS

      Balance and Mobility

      Balance, movement and mobility - the three steps you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This class will assist participants in improving balance. The instructor will lead you through easy exercises to improve stability and potentially prevent falls. The workouts assist in improving posture, muscle strength and speed, sharpening reflexes, expanding flexibility and firming your core. The instructor may also give tips for fall proofing your home. Held at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Taught by Russell McNeil.

      Stretch & Relax Yoga

      This is basic classical Hatha yoga. It focuses on gentle stretches before each pose. Time is given to rest or relax briefly after anything that is strenuous. This is not a flow class. Taught by Shanti (Dorlean) Peck.

      Sculpt & Tone

      This class incorporates a warm up, cardio, resistance training and a cool down/stretch. This would benefit older adults for bone and joint health by developing lean muscle and increasing metabolism. Taught by Brian Sugiyama.

      Yoga Qi Gong/Meditation

      This is an ancient art incorporating movements, static poses, breath concentration and visualization to activate the flow of intrinsic life energy (chi) in the body, restoring and promoting vitality and balance of mind and body. Taught by Thommas Michaud, Yoga Master. Held at Bowen Park Clubhouse.

      Chair Yoga

      This class is designed for people who experience difficulty doing floor exercise. Yoga exercises have many benefits, including stretching, relaxing and helping you to feel energized. Held at Bowen Park Complex. Taught by Russell McNeil.
