Nanaimo’s harbour is one of our city’s greatest assets, and the existing Waterfront Walkway showcases its natural beauty. There has been a strong desire in the community to expand the walkway. Following a number of public engagement sessions in 2017, a plan to extend the walkway from Departure Bay to Nanaimo River Estuary, and improve its connections to other existing trail and bike networks, was developed.

To help build momentum on expanding the waterfront walkway network, the plan identified two sections that can be built in 2018 and 2019. City staff and consultants worked on preliminary design concepts and took them to an Open House on June 5, 2018 in Maffeo Sutton Park where attendees had the opportunity to:

  • Review the preliminary design for the section from BC Ferries Departure Bay Terminal to White Eagle Terrace and for a section in the South Downtown Waterfront.
  • Provide input on how well the design addresses the community's goals and how the design could be improved.
