Nanaimo’s harbour is one of our city’s greatest assets, and the existing Waterfront Walkway showcases its natural beauty. There has been a strong desire in the community to expand the walkway. City Council made a commitment to develop a plan on how to extend from Departure Bay to Nanaimo River Estuary and improve its connections to other existing trail and bike networks. They have also committed to building five small, but important, sections of the walkway in 2018.

Following three Open Houses and a Design Workshop held in May and June, 2017 to gain public input, the City prepared a draft plan and hosted two Open Houses on September 28, 2017 in the Kin Hut and September 30, 2017 in Maffeo Sutton Park where attendees had the opportunity to:

  • Review the draft walkway alignment and cross sections.
  • Provide your input on how well the plan addresses the community’s goals.
  • Comment on how the plan could be further improved.
