Public Engagement Pilot Program

Jul 23, 2018, 15:51 PM

The City is planning a new community engagement program and is working with a group of residents and members from Council to develop the program which will consist of four engagement sessions over the course of one year. After the year is up, the results and feedback from the sessions will be reviewed and recommendations will be brought to Council.

Session 4 - Empowering Neighbourhoods
The final session in the pilot program will focus on building relationships between Council and neighbourhoods.

The need to strengthen neighbourhood associations as a means of encouraging citizen representation in the engagement process was one of the recommendations made by participants at the first Pilot Project Session held by the Task Force in November 2017. Organizing this final session geographically around neighbourhoods will provide an opportunity for a diverse group of residents of each neighbourhood to identify the issues that are of concern to them and perhaps are common across neighbourhoods. It will also provide members of the new Council an opportunity to more fully understand needs at a neighbourhood level.

Facilitated by Larissa Cozer with moderators from the Young Professionals of Nanaimo, the session will involve round table discussions organized by neighbourhoods where attendees will have the opportunity to meet members of the new Council, share what they love about their neighbourhood, identify issues of concern and work together on solutions.

Once this final session is complete, members of the Community Engagement Task Force will prepare a report on their findings from the Public Engagement Pilot Program and will present to Council in 2019.

When and Where: Wednesday, November 21, 2018 from 7-9:30 pm, Beban Park Social Centre, 2300 Bowen Road. The session will begin promptly at 7 pm so participants are asked to be in their seats by that time.

Who is invited to attend: All members of the public. Space is limited. Please RSVP to or 250-755-4460 ext. 4265 by Monday, November 19, 2018.
