Georgia Greenway and Harewood Utility Upgrades

Project Description

Hazelwood Construction Services Inc., working for the City of Nanaimo, continues to with utility upgrades and construction of the Georgia Greenway trail and bridge. Utility upgrades on Bruce Avenue, Duke Street, Sixth Street and Seventh Street are ongoing. Construction of the Georgia Greenway trail is also underway and bridge installation work will start in late February.

Construction works include:

  • Watermain Upgrades on Bruce Avenue, Duke Street, Georgia Avenue and Sixth Street
  • Sanitary Sewer Upgrades on Sixth Street and Bruce Avenue
  • New sidewalk on Sixth Street
  • New 4 metre wide multi-use trail and bridge connecting Sixth Street and Seventh Street
  • New LED lighting along the multi-use trail and bridge
  • Safety upgrades at the intersection crossings of both Georgia Avenue and Sixth Street; and Georgia Avenue and Seventh Street

Local Traffic Restrictions remain in effect as follows:

PARTIAL ROAD CLOSURES LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY, THRU TRAFFIC DETOUR:

Sixth Street between Georgia Avenue and Bruce Avenue Normal working hours 7am – 5pm

Duke Street between Georgia Avenue and Bruce Avenue Normal working hours 7am – 5pm

General Considerations

  • Construction noise and vibration should be expected during working hours.
  • Typical hours of work for this project will be Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with afterhours and weekends as required.
  • Residents and businesses will be notified 24 hours in advance of any scheduled water shutdowns.
  • Environmental monitoring will be in place to ensure best management practices are followed.
  • Sixth Street and Duke Street will be restricted to local traffic only within the construction area until works are completed.
  • A full road closure of Bruce Avenue (at the intersection of Sixth Street) is also scheduled for December 4, 2018.
  • On street parking will not be permitted within the project area to allow working space for materials and equipment.
  • Construction signs will be posted and flagpersons will be on duty to assist with the traffic flow.
  • Please exercise caution, obey all signage placed for your safety and follow the directions of the flagpersons on duty.
  • If you have young children, please advise them of the dangers and limited visibility of heavy equipment and trucks.
  • Landscape restoration will be done at the end of the project.

Estimate Construction Start Date: Late November 2018

Estimate Construction Completion Date: Summer 2019
