How does the City bill me for solid waste collection?
Residents of Nanaimo pay for their solid waste collection service through their user rate bill. This charge is billed to the resident three times a year. Sewer and water charges also appear on this bill.
What will the Sort Toss Roll program cost?
The costs of the Sort Toss Roll program are expected to be around $8 million in total. This includes the purchase of 8 new trucks and 3 wheeled carts for every home in Nanaimo. The project will be paid for by garbage user rates. The user rates are currently $165 per household.
What will the impact to the user rate be?
User rates are expected have increased from $118.04 per household in July 2017 to $165 per house hold in 2018 to cover the costs of implementing the Sort Toss Roll project. Starting in 2019 we anticipate that user rates will begin to decrease to $150 per household. These projected rates are based on current assumptions and do not include inflation. The charts below show projected garbage user rates from 2017-2018.

Automated solid waste collection provides good value for money for residents. The benefits of automated collection include:
