Reconsideration Motion Gender Specific Guarding

Councillor Fuller brought forward a motion to reconsider the October 24 decision to eliminate four prison guard positions as recommended in the Core Service Review. The motion included:

  • adopt core services review final report recommendation to reduce the number of guards per shift from 2 employees to 1 employee,
  • direct staff to schedule a female guard on-call for those shifts where a male is on duty,
  • direct staff to monitor and report back on the new guarding process in 12 months from date of implementation,
  • direct staff to work with RCMP to address implementation of new guarding process, and
  • direct staff to work with Public Safety Committee to make recommendatinos on a strategy to address this is as part of the Social Wellness Strategy and options for working with key community stakeholders.

Motion defeated.

Nanaimo’s talent recognized

The 2016 Civic Merit Awards were handed out to local recipients and teams for Provincial, National and International accomplishments.

Section 5a

Cleaning up properties

The owners of 1068 Palomino Place, 690 Drake Street, 528 Fourth Street and 388 Pine Street were ordered to clean up their properties within 14 days or the City will clean them up at the owner’s expense.

Nanaimo development updates

A new house will be built at 3394 Stephenson Point Road with the variance to reduce the watercourse setback from 15m to 13.6m sop an overhanging deck can be included.

Section 9a

Motion carried.

1019 Vancouver Avenue will see a new house built with variances to reduce the watercourse setback from 15m to 4.53m and the rear yard setback from 7.5m to 5.97m.

Section 9b

Motion carried: Unanimous.

A 30-unit multi-family residence at 3425 Uplands Drive will have 10 of its units set aside for developmentally disabled adults along with a live-in caretaker to manage the building thanks to a housing agreement that was drawn up for the development.

Section 9c

Motion carried: Unanimous.

Construction started without a permit

The properties at 108-5854 Turner Road and 1241 Woodlands Street received a notice on the property title for starting construction without a permit.

Motion carried: Unanimous.

Secondary suites addressed

The properties located at 3239 Crystal Place, 254 Emery Way and 360 St. George Streetreceived a notice on the property title for failing to conform to the City’s building bylaw for secondary suites to be upgraded to address life safety issues.

Motion carried: Unanimous.

The properties located at 9 Acacia Avenue, 106 Wakesiah Avenue and 424 Bruce Avenue were ordered to remove unauthorized suites that were built without a building permit.
