May 15, 2017 Regular Council Summary

Improvements slated for intersection 
After deferring for one year to determine the status of rail in Nanaimo, Council has chosen to go ahead with safety improvements to the intersection at Northfield and the old Island Highway.

Tourism committee established
Appointments were made to the Tourism Advisory Committee. Members include individuals from the local tourism industry and include Mike Bauche, Leif Bogwald, Dan Brady, Chao Chang, Lex Dunn, Rosemary Gibson, Jenn Houtby-Ferguson, Dale Partridge, Robert Plante, Joan Spencer and Henry Traa.

Additions to Pridewalks
The downtown rainbow-painted crosswalks, also known as PrideWalks, will be repainted and two new PrideWalks will be added in time for Nanaimo Pride in June.

Development around Nanaimo
Two six-storey multi-family buildings will go up at 91 Chapel Street with variances to increase the building height.

5260 Dublin Way will see a new 60-unit multi-family rental building with variances to increase the building height and reduce on-site parking.

A requested variance to reduce the number of parking stalls at 1825 and 1805 Summerhill Place from 188 to 168 was denied.

Overdose prevention site to become permanent
Steps are being taken to make the existing location of the temporary overdose prevention site at 437 Wesley Street permanent with changes to the Zoning Amendment Bylaw passing first and second readings.

Heritage, event grants
The old fire hall on Nicol Streret will receive a $14,316 Heritage Façade Grant, $9,316 will be transferred from the Heritage Home Grant Program to cover a shortfall in the Heritage Façade Grant program and $115,841 in funding was approved for applicants to the Downtown Event Grant.
