City to host design workshop for Waterfront Walkway

Summary

The City of Nanaimo is continuing with the development of a Waterfront Walkway Implementation Plan, building on a series of well attended open houses in May 2017. The City also received over 1,900 responses to a public survey which provides direction on priorities and the desires of the community.

A Stakeholder Workshop is planned for Thursday June 22nd from 1-5pm at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre and is by invite only. The public are invited to view the work and talk with participants from 5pm to 7pm.

After the June 22nd Workshop, the consultant team will then spend the summer months further developing the project. A set of public open houses will be held in September to obtain feedback on the draft implementation plan.

  • The survey had over 1,900 responses. The two sections of the walkway that were deemed the highest priority by respondents are the Departure Bay to BC Ferries Terminal, and along the Newcastle Channel from the BC Ferries Terminal to the Millstone River.

Quotes

"The City received considerable feedback from the public at the initial open houses and we will be using that feedback as we commence the preliminary designs. The stakeholder workshop will give us an opportunity to overlay the existing issues and priorities and see what is possible. The public is welcome to come down to the VICC on June 22nd from 5pm to 7pm to view the initial work and let us know if we are on the right track."
