City moves ahead with the installation of multi-space pay parking machines

New parking strategy being implemented to relieve congestion in downtown core

Summary

The City of Nanaimo will be installing multi-space pay parking machines on downtown streets over the next ten days. These machines will replace the single space meters currently on street in the downtown as well as converting the current two hour free areas to pay parking. The machines, similar to the type used in the off street lots, will have the user enter their licence plate numbers to initiate a parking session.

The current practice of offering free parking in the evenings and weekends for on street parking will be continued.

Link to Strategic Plan: Providing an up to date parking system will improve the functionality of our downtown streets.

Key Points

  • The installation of the multi-space machines will allow for a more consistent turn over of parked vehicles on city streets in the downtown core.
  • Modernizing our current parking management system will allow for a more rational approach to parking management.

Quotes

"The City of Nanaimo has been working toward modernizing the parking system and is confident that the installation of these machines will improve the parking situation in our downtown."
