Colliery Dams Update

Council approves Select Committee Terms of Reference

Summary

During its meeting held July 27, Council took steps to begin the process of carrying out a motion approved July 20 to proceed with the construction of an auxiliary spillway by first agreeing on a Terms of Reference for the soon to be convened Select Committee. Through the passed motion, the Committee (which will serve as an advisory body to Council during the design and construction of the auxiliary spillway) was assigned a variety of duties. For a complete listing of the duties outlined in the Terms of Reference, please see the attachment accompanying this news release.

Also included in the Terms of Reference is the composition of the Committee, which includes:

  • Two representatives from the Snuneymuxw First Nation
  • Two representatives from the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society
  • Two individuals from the community at large
  • Two City Councillors (appointed - Councillor Bill Yoachim and Councillor Jim Kipp)

The Committee will be supported by a facilitator and Golder Associates as the dam engineering resource. City staff will function as a technical resource, plus provide administrative support.

  • The Terms of Reference for the Colliery Dam Select Committee have been agreed to by Council. The Committee will consist of eight members, of which two will be drawn from the community at large. Anyone interested in filling the two community seats on the Committee are invited to submit their names.
  • Subject to her availability, Dr. Michelle Corfield has been appointed as an independent facilitator of the Colliery Dams Select Committee. She will also work as the lead liaison for the City with the Province.
