Colliery Dams Update

Summary

On April 9, 2015, the City of Nanaimo received an Order from the Provincial Dam Safety Section. The Order requires the City to select one of two proposed remediation options for the Lower Colliery Dam and thereafter evaluate options to remediate the Middle Colliery Dam.

The Provincial Order states that, pursuant to the Water Act, the Comptroller of Water Rights orders the City of Nanaimo to:

  • Select one of the two following Lower Dam remediation options (labyrinth spillway design or auxiliary spillway);

  • Notify the Province of the selected option by May 1, 2015;

  • Prepare and submit design and construction plans to the Province by May 22, 2015;

  • Substantially complete construction of the chosen remediation option by October 15, 2015.
