Update: Colliery Dams

Summary

At its meeting of March 16, Nanaimo City Council received a staff report regarding the Colliery Dams. The report summarized various dam remediation options and provided information on a letter the City received from the Provincial Dam Safety Section dated February 25. The letter from the Province stated the City must provide a plan and timeline for action to be undertaken on the dams by March 27, 2015.

Following discussion on the dams, Council passed a motion to develop and implement the subsequent plans:

  • Colliery Dams Emergency Preparedness Plan
  • Colliery Dams Surveillance Plan; and
  • Colliery Dams Flood Routing Capacity Action Plan

The motion, approved by Council, has been forwarded to the Province.
