Spillway cost tallied
The cost of designing and constructing the lower spillway in Colliery Dam Park totaled $4.463 million which was lower than estimated. Total costs related to Colliery Dams are $7.07 million. The middle dam is under review and a risk assessment is expected to be completed next year.

Budget boost for Beban Plaza sewers
The plan to update the sanitary and storm sewers under Beban Plaza needed a boost to the budget after receiving tender results showing costs to be $156,000 higher than budgeted. The project is now expected to cost $995,000.

Limited development potential for old water reservoir lands
The potential of developing the old water reservoir lands on Nanaimo Lakes Road was studied and found four areas could be considered for non-park uses. However, amendments would need to be made to the Official Community Plan as well a more detailed analysis would be needed to see if it would be economically viable to develop these areas. An open house is being planned to get public feedback on the park and non-park options are being planned.

Combating human trafficking and sexual exploitation
Following a request for more information, staff reported to Council that the City and RCMP are leading a community-based response to reduce the harm associated with the sex trade and the trafficking of women for the purposes of sexual exploitation

Nanaimo development updates
Two new multi-use buildings at 1680 and 1690 Townsite Road in the midst of being constructed got the go ahead to vary the number of parking spaces from a total of 100 to 74 for both buildings. The residential units in the building will also be deemed rental housing rather than condominiums.

The owners of 2099 Lark Crescent got the green light to rebuild a garage on their property with a variance to reduce the setback of the garage from the house from 1.2m to 0.61m.

The proposed redevelopment of the old Madill grounds is moving into the next phase of rezoning from Light Industrial to Corridor. Two car dealerships, a furniture store, three mixed-use buildings and a seniors housing complex are planned to go into the site.

Construction started without a permit
The properties at 1981B Wilfert Road, 773 Hunter Street and 6144 Somerside Place received a notice on the property title for starting construction without a permit.

Cleaning up properties
The owners of 559 Seventh Street, 611 Seventh Street, 1861 East Wellington Road, 224 View Street, 218 View Street, 300 Jade Avenue and 432 Howard Avenue were ordered to clean up their properties within 14 days or the City will clean them up at the owner’s expense.

The property located at 6631 Groveland Drivereceived a notice on the property title for failing to conform to the City’s building bylaw for secondary suites that need upgrading to address life safety issues.
