Funding boost for FireSmart program
The FireSmart Program in Nanaimo will get a financial boost with Council’s endorsement of a $10,000 grant from the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM). The funding will go towards public engagement and education on reducing the risk of wildfires in Nanaimo.

Appointments made to Parcel Tax Roll Review panel 
Mayor McKay along with Councilors Bestwick and Hong were appointed to the Parcel Tax Roll Review Panel. Councilor Fuller was named as an alternate. Their term ends on December 31, 2017.

Preparations underway for parcel tax 
The preparations to roll out the 2017 Parks and Trail Parcel Tax are underway. In effect since 2006, the $14 per parcel tax goes towards acquiring, developing and operating regional parks and regional trails. The tax remains at the same level as in 2016.

Changes to corporate officers
A couple of changes have been made to the senior leadership structure at the City. The Chief Financial Officer will take on the role of Deputy Chief Administrative Officer when the Chief Administrative Officer is away and the Director of Human Resources has been appointed an Officer of the City.

Support for extending pub hours
Council supported an application from Carlos O’Bryan’s Neighbourhood Pub to the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch to extend their operating hours.
