Strategic Plan update approved
After receiving public input from the July 25 eTown Hall, revisions were made to Council’s Strategic Plan Update which included food security, parks accessibility and space for recreation. Council will now move forward with implementing their priorities and associated projects and initiatives.

Core Review next steps
The City will be hosting public and stakeholder input sessions, including an eTown Hall meeting in September, based on the recommendations from the Core Services Review. An Implementation Plan is expected to be complete by the end of September.

New intersection for Linley Valley West
A traffic circle at Nelson and Rutherford Road got the go-ahead to move into the final design phase. This intersection will connect the new Linley Valley West neighbourhood to Rutherford Road.

Lease extended for Scouts
The City renewed a 10-year lease to the First Nanaimo Scouts for the use of the land the Scout Hut is located on at Comox Road.

Budget boost for Protection Island
The Beacon House Community Centre on Protection Island will receive an additional $40,672 in their budget for renovations to the building. The total budget will be $138,396 with $40,000 of the budget being raised by residents and the Lions Club.

Development around Nanaimo
A new 36-unit multi-family rental development at 3690 Country Club Drive will get the green light with a few variances to allow for a smaller front setback, fence height increase from 1.8m to 2.4m, reduction of parking spaces from 59 to 38 and reducing the size of parking spaces to accommodate small cars.

Brooks Landing will get some new businesses and shops with the development of a new commercial building located at the Highland Boulevard-side of the mall’s parking lot getting the green light.

The property located at 1643 King John Way got the go ahead to increase the allowable height of a perimeter fence from 7.32m to 9m on the front and from 7.32m to 11.75m at the sides of the property.

The property located at 3855 Gulfview Drive got approval to increase the allowable height of a perimeter fence from 7.32m to 8.98m and increase the building height from 9m to 9.43m.

Construction started without a permit
The property located at 1667 Extension Road received a notice on title for starting construction on their property without a permit.

Nuisance properties
2020 Swordfern Road and 573 Rosehill Street were declared nuisance properties due to an unprecedented number of nuisance calls reported by neighbours of each residence over the past year. By declaring these as nuisance properties, the City can recover the cost of nuisance calls incurred either by City staff or the RCMP.

Cleaning up properties
The property owners of 1735 Northfield Road, 1978 Extension Road, 340 Harewood Road, 240 Skinner Street and 440 Selby Street were ordered to clean up their properties within 14 days or the City will clean them up at the owner’s expense.

Secondary suites addressed
The properties located at 424/426 Bruce Avenue, 684 Montague Road, 4170 Verte Place and 4175 Victoria Avenue received a notice on the property title for failing to conform to the City’s building bylaw for secondary suites that need upgrading to address life safety issues.
